The Mind Factory recommends the VS1001 , VS1002, VS1003 because it is a true single-chip solution for MPEG layer 3 audio decoding, it includes a digital to analog converter and earphone amplifier.

The chip also contains a high-performance low-power DSP processor core, working memory, 4 kBytes of program RAM and 0.3 kBytes of data RAM for user applications, serial control and input data interfaces, and high-quality oversampling variable-sample-rate stereo DAC.

VS1001 receives its input bitstream through a serial input bus. The input stream is decoded and passed to an 18-bit oversampling, multi-bit, sigma-delta DAC. Decoding is controlled via a serial control bus. In addition to basic decoding, it is possible to add application specific features, like DSP effects, to the program RAM memory of VS1001.

The VS1001 together with our MP3 streaming controller creates a low cost, low part count finished product capable of USB, serial or parallel interface, FAT16/32 support, and enough left over resources to add the code required to make your application come to life. Functions such as playlist, random, volume, eq are all available so products like trunk mounted MP3 players mimicking CD changers, industrial audio playback and music on hold systems are all possible.
